Bartlett is a neighborhood-centric city that sits northeast of Memphis, a community of more than 50,000 residents, making it the 10th largest city in Tennessee. It was first settled in 1829 and originally was known as Union Depot for what was the last major way station along a stagecoach route from Nashville to Memphis. It later served as a depot along the Memphis & Ohio Railroad line. It was incorporated as Bartlett in 1866. The city was named for Major Gabriel M. Bartlett, an owner of several large plantations on Stage Road, the main east-west artery through the town. At one time Bartlett was centered on agriculture, but the city’s economy later moved to industry and a variety of retailers.
