Germantown

Germantown is a community of some 40,000 residents that sits just to the east of Memphis. This suburban city’s neighborhoods offer an array of options for homeowners, from mid-century houses to new construction. The heart of Germantown is within minutes of much of the East Memphis office sector, as well as the Southeast Shelby County tech center’s array of corporate offices, including the FedEx World Headquarters.

Germantown was incorporated in 1841 and grew in the 1850s thanks to its location along the Memphis-Charleston Railroad. The community’s population dwindled after the Civil War and the yellow fever epidemic that paralyzed Memphis in the 1870s. The town slowly grew around the turn of the 19th century. Anti-German sentiment led to a temporary name change to Neshoba.

Germantown is home to plenty of retail options, with major national brands housed at the Shops of Saddle Creek lifestyle center, where Memphis’ only Apple Store is located, along with Anthropologie, Loft, Lucky Brand Jeans and many others. Germantown is home to one of the metro area’s two Whole Foods locations, and is slated to contain the first Trader Joe’s in the Memphis market. Germantown is also near the commercial district of Germantown Parkway and is minutes from Interstate 240, which connects it to the greater Memphis area.

The Germantown Municipal School District provides quality educational opportunities at its five schools: two elementary schools, one K-8, one middle school and one high school. The Washington Post has named Houston High School as one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools. Germantown Elementary, Middle, and High schools are part of the Shelby County Schools system and are also located in the community. A variety of private schools have campuses in Germantown, and Union University also has a campus in the city.

Germantown residents have access to a community recreation system that offers a variety of youth sports, including baseball, softball, soccer, and basketball. There are nearly 30 parks in the community along with a vast array of walking trails and bike lanes, including paths that follow the Wolf River on the north part of town and connect to the larger Wolf River Greenway and nearby Shelby Farms Park. World-class concerts and events regularly take place at the Germantown Performing Arts Center, and the adjacent Great Hall & Conference Center provides ample meeting space. The Germantown Athletic Club is an 118,000-square-foot indoor athletic complex that also includes outdoor pools.
